Merseyside International Brigades Network



The Merseyside Volunteers of the International Brigades

The lists of volunteers, and their details, have been gathered from a wide range of sources. However, there can be no definitive list of the Merseysiders who served in Spain. Details have been lost, obscured by time, and affected by the particular circumstances of the conflict: resulting in gaps in the records and question marks over the accuracy of some items. It must be
remembered that during enlistment in Spain, some volunteers used pseudonyms, whilst enlistment officers (often Spanish, French or German), unfamiliar with the names and other details provided, may have wrongly transcribed them. The list includes some volunteers, who, while not natives of Merseyside, were resident in the area at the time of enlistment – and others, Merseyside-born, who enlisted from places such as London. The service dates represent the period from enlistment torepatriation or death. However, some volunteers were present in Spain many months before the official records suggest. This list of one hundred and seventy-nine volunteers indicates thirty who died in Spain, and the area or engagement where they
fell (e.g. Jarama, Aragón). It’s hoped that future research, and input from interested parties, will allow a more accurate representation of the Merseyside volunteers and their contribution to the struggle for freedom and the fight against fascism. A key to the terminology and abbreviations used can be found at the foot of this page.
