Merseyside International Brigades Network
Aims
The Merseyside International Brigades Network aims to commemorate and improve understanding of the role of the Merseysiders who volunteered for the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War.
The Spanish Civil War has received much attention from academia and the media. However, the experiences of the Merseyside volunteers – their background and motivation for going to Spain – has been neglected or left to a few enthusiastic researchers. Consequently, there is a need for continued research in this area: work that will allow a better understanding of the volunteers’ sacrifice and contribution to the defence of democracy and freedom. The Merseyside International Brigades Network has been set up to try and achieve this through research, education and co-operation with like-minded groups and individuals. A comprehensive history of Merseyside’s contribution to the International Brigades and the struggle in Spain has yet to be written.
The Network has close links with the International Brigades Memorial Trust (IBMT) - the UK's primary institution for the commemoration and research into the British International Brigaders - as well as local and regional organisations, community groups and trade unions, and is seeking to make further links with local history groups, schools, colleges, educationalists, academics, researchers, and any others interested in the contribution of Merseyside to the International Brigades and to the Spanish Civil War. We hope to develop a series of learning materials and educational resources, and would be interested in hearing from anyone who could contribute to this project. We hope that this website will form a repository of useful material that those interested in the subject can freely access and benefit from. We are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who may be a relative of a volunteer, and who might have information on them or who can shed light on the experiences before, during and after the conflict.
